we can offer shows, workshops and
classes however these can have a completely different air to them
1.
Shows: We realize that a lot of youth projects are set up to help
disaffected, misunderstood or just lost youths. Most issues stem from deep
rooted social problems including domestic violence, bullying, drugs, lack of
belonging, unemployment etc. Youth projects go a long way to help these people
gain a sense of belonging and try and help them with their problems. We want to
try and help reinforce that effort through the medium of drama and performance.
As shown in the schools section we can create personalized shows for your
specific needs, I think that the more involved this intended audience is the
more they get out of it. So most shows we will create for youth projects are
fully audience interactive they involve the audience actively making choices and
thus seeing the consequences of these choices, we believe that by seeing these
choices and seeing the consequences helps the subject become real. And they
therefore are not just informed of their choices but UNDERSTAND them. We believe
that these coupled with workshops are a great way to approach taboo or difficult
subjects.
2.
Workshops: In the youth work capacity these fit in very nicely with a
show. They allow active discussion and analysis of what they have seen. None of
our performers are prudish or easily upset and very frank and honest. We can
openly discuss any part of the performance, social problem or anything you feel
relates to the issue being discussed. We can create pamphlets or use this time
to distribute anything relevant that the youth club wishes us too. Or we can
create an information pack about the specific issue to accompany the production.
3.
Classes: I think these are a great way in a youth project setting to
promote and improve many skills important in everyday life. These include team
work and team building, confidence, trust, inclusion, communication and a host
of other skills. I think that having a structure to classes helps especially
when the individuals concerned are more vulnerable. I believe that first and
foremost you have to build trust between the students and the teachers and
between the students themselves. That is why the first lesson or two are devoted
entirely to trust games, team work and team building exercises. Then once trust
is established you can go on to build peoples confidence and ensure that all are
included and that there are no exclusion issues. From here we can work more
specifically on drama including scripts, improvisation, movement, dance, mask
work etc. We can introduce guest directors, dances, physical theatre artists etc
to allow variety and maintain a high level of interest.
